"Years ago, when I was just starting out as a winemaker, it was almost unheard of to get French oak wine barrels and American oak barrels were for whiskey, not wine. But we still needed barrels to age our wine, so we purchased new and used bourbon barrels. Today, American and French oak wine barrels are commonplace, so the inspiration for 1000 Stories is a nod to the way things were. We've selected new and used bourbon barrels for these small batches of Zinfandel, which impart characteristics specific to these barrels: charred vanilla, dried herbs and a hint of caramel." Aresti Mystique Mystery One Reserva Red Blend (75 cl), €10.00

Vinification The grapes in this Red Blend were carefully harvested and vinified. Fermentation took place under controlled temperature conditions between 25 and 27°C to preserve the freshness, smoothness and intensity of aromas. Following fermentation, 50% of the blend was aged in third fill or older French and American oak barrels for six months and the remainder was aged in stainless steel vats to preserve its fruity aromas.

Vinification The grapes were harvested in late March, crushed, and fermented at 26°C for 7 days, with a total of 12 days of skin contact. Afterward, the grapes were pressed. Malolactic fermentation took place in French and American oak barrels, where they continue to evolve and gain complexity during a 12-month aging period. Tasting Notes Intensely ruby red Carignan, offering complex notes of black fruits, earthy nuances, and delicate floral hints. Full-bodied with firm tannins, it boasts a long, persistent finish with echoes of chocolate and coffee.

To the eye, this Bourgogne Pinot Noir is richly coloured in its youth, then, with the age, shading towards dark ruby. To the nose it offers at first a basket of small red and black fruits (strawberry, cherry, blackcurrant, bilberry) later evolving into cooked prune and peppery notes. It is lively and structured in the mouth with a well-rounded and supple backbone.

Aglianico is a black grape grown in the southern regions of Italy, mostly Basilicata and Campania. It produces a full-bodied wine with firm tannins and high-acidity giving it good aging potential. This Aglianico is a dark, deep ruby red with enjoyable cherry and red berries fragrance followed by a marked vanilla and spicy note. A soft, pleasant mouth feel with nuances of cherry, plum and spice. Pairs beautifully with all roasted red meats and aged cheeses.

Prince Larquey was the Black Prince's riding companion during the Hundred Years' War and was rewarded with this castle. The property has 25 hectares of vineyard on clay-limestone soil. This red wine reveals notes of juicy black fruits, a supple palate, a subtly woody finish.

Winemakers for generations, Family Sorges acquired Château Haut Médou in 1957. They started with only 6 hectares of vineyards and extended to more than 200 hectares in Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations. Château Haut Médou has a deep red colour, with a rich nose of black fruits aromas. On the palate this wine has a well-balanced evolution with velvety mature tannins.

After a total de-stemming, the long maceration during the vinification is performed under careful temperature control to bring out the best parts of the tannins potential. The wine has been aged in new French casks for 12 months long in the underground cellars of the Château. Winemakers comments: Deep colour, aromas of blackberries and hints of spice. The ageing has given elegance to its rich and tannic structure. Fine and soft with smooth, well integrated tannins on the palate, this full bodied wine deserves its place alongside any Bordeaux Grand Cru.

Over the years Mêaume has built a reputation for exceptional value. Dark, fruity and well balanced, this wine is ready for drinking now and will benefit from maturing for many years hereafter. A stunning property dating back to the 17th century, the Château Sissan vineyard estate stretches out to the uppermost reaches of Camblanes, guaranteeing the vines are ideally situated. The vineyard of Château Tour Baladoz is located on a clay-chalk soil, at one of the highest places of the appellation. The Merlot grapes is the main grape variety that has been used with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon giving further depth to the wine. The grapes are harvested when they are at their ripest and they are aged with care. This wine is fleshy and pronounced on the nose and is supported by nice structured tannins.
