


Air Fryer Hot Cross Buns with Custard
A nostalgic throwback dessert, the old classics are always the best. This comforting, moreish treat is making a comeback, and baked in the air fryer, it’s the perfect Easter dessert.

Air Fryer Hot Cross Buns with Custard

300ml full-fat milk
200ml double cream
1 vanilla pod or 1 tsp vanilla essence
4 eggs
170g caster sugar
6 hot cross buns, sliced in half and buttered
Handful of raisins
Zest of 1 orange
2 tbsp sugar
Vanilla ice cream
Icing sugar
Directions
Ingredients
- 300ml full-fat milk
- 200ml double cream
- 1 vanilla pod or 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 4 eggs
- 170g caster sugar
- 6 hot cross buns, sliced in half and buttered
- Handful of raisins
- Zest of 1 orange
- 2 tbsp sugar
To serve:
- Vanilla ice cream
- Icing sugar (for decoration)
Method
- Soak the raisins in hot water for 5 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan, combine the milk, cream, and vanilla pod seeds or essence. Bring to a simmer.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until pale and smooth.
- Gradually whisk the warm cream mixture into the egg and sugar mixture, ensuring it’s fully combined.
- Pour the custard mixture into a container that fits your air fryer.
- Layer the buttered hot cross buns in the custard mixture, then sprinkle the soaked raisins and orange zest over the top. Make sure all the bread is soaking in the mixture.
- Sprinkle 2 tbsp of sugar over the top of the buns.
- Air fry at 180°C for 15 minutes, or until golden and custardy.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dusting of icing sugar.
